I know for most of us, this is week 2 of life beginning again, so I am just starting here. Since Makenna was very young...about 20 months old...I have taught her verses from the Bible. That was when she began struggling with anxiety, and I knew hiding the Word in her heart was so important for fighting it. I also did not stick to "kid" verses. The first verse she memorized was Ephesians 1:6, "Children obey your parents, for it is right in the Lord." The next one has become the cry of her little heart many times over the last 5+ years. 2 Timothy 1:7, "For God did not give me a spirit of fear, but of power, love and self-discipline." I have done various devotional books with her, and I have not been impressed with the quality. So I have decided to work on a verse a week with her and Tracen. Some verses might take longer than a week, of course, but we will see as we go. I also want to have every fifth week to review one verse a night that we have covered. Last week we began with 2 Timothy 1:7 as a refresher. This week we are starting John 8:32. "You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." (we struggle with truth here...so i thought it was appropriate) I would love for all of you to do this with us! What we do is introduce the verse Monday night by looking it up and saying it many times. We also discuss the meaning of the verse. The next nights we practice it by repetition, address, verse, address, and then take small parts of the verse to discuss. For example, last week we reviewed then focused on what fear was, how God gives us power one night, love, then self-discipline. I just do this Monday through Friday, sometimes Thursday if we are out and about later than normal on a Friday. It does not take long at all and is such a great bedtime routine thing. I just really want to equip my kids the best I can. The Word is more than enough for them, beyond what any devotional book can bring. So, I challenge all of us to start Monday night with:
John 8:32
You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.
John 8:32
Some extra verses to look up during the week with your older kids are:
John 1:14-17-Jesus was filled with grace and truth, so we should be, too
Proverbs 3:3, 8:7, and 12:17
I would love for you all to comment about if you are going to start this with us! I will most likely post the verse for the coming week on Sunday night or sometime Monday, then we can all work together. It will also help us as parents soooo much.
Yay for being free and knowing the truth. We are the best example of that to our children...conviction is knocking at my door. :)
Hugs!

sounds aweseome - we started this with boston just this summer after vbs - i had no idea he was old enough to start memorizing verses, but he memorized every one at vbs and STILL knows them -- since then, we have just picked one a week - last week he wanted one about handy manny - so we came up with 2 Timothy 2:15 (talks about being a workman who is not ashamed) - he loves it and is doing great! I would love to join up with you guys and know that we are on the same page -- it will be so cool!
I'm in! Mali also has a verse a week at pre k.
i love it! you're so cool, mel! a game that's easy that will help them remember, is writing the verse down and then erasing or covering up one word at a time until they can say the whole thing w/o looking. :) HAVE FUN!
You are so awesome! What a great mom! I want to be like you! :) And...I would love for you to move to SA so we can hang out more! You make my heart glad too! I am so thankful for you. Love you and miss you like crazy! Can't wait to see you again.
I love this! I want to do it too! Please help be stay accounable!
Yay! Last night we worked on the verse and talked about what truth was. We said jesus was the way, truth, and life, only 100% truth comes from the word, and that truth didn't have any room for a lie. Tonight we will talk more about speaking truth that we know. :)
that's a great idea. I will do when she gets a little older!
Love this idea Melissa. I started working with Caleb and Caroline on some verses a while back but haven't done it lately. I have this thing that lists verses that start with each letter of the alphabet. You've motivated me to start working on this again! Thanks!
